Slack AI GDPR and SOC 2 compliance: what you need to know

Slack AI reads your message history. That is what it does. It generates summaries, surfaces relevant conversations, and answers questions based on the content of your channels. For most companies, Slack is already the most data-rich communication tool in the organization: customer discussions, incident logs, HR conversations, executive decision-making, sales pipeline discussions. All of it.

Slack AI trains on your messages unless you opt out in workspace settings

When AI starts processing that content, the compliance implications are significant. Here is what GDPR and SOC 2 require, what Slack's documentation actually says, and what needs to be in place before your next audit.

What Slack AI does with your messages

Slack AI is available as an add-on for Pro, Business+, and Enterprise Grid customers. It provides channel summaries, thread summaries, search with AI-powered results, and a conversational interface ("Ask Slack AI") that can answer questions based on your message history.

The compliance-relevant behavior:

Slack AI processes content within your workspace. Prompts and responses do not leave Slack's infrastructure in the way that using the OpenAI API directly would. Slack sends data to its own AI infrastructure (which uses Salesforce and third-party model providers under the covers) rather than routing your messages to a public API you query yourself.

Slack AI does not train foundational models on your data. Slack's policy is explicit: customer data is not used to train the AI models that power Slack AI. This has been confirmed in Slack's documentation and their DPA.

Which channels are accessible to Slack AI? By default, Slack AI can access public channels in your workspace. Private channels and DMs require explicit access grants. Understand what you are granting before deploying Slack AI to the whole organization.

Slack's compliance certifications

Slack holds the following certifications relevant to compliance programs:

SOC 2 Type II: Covering security, availability, and confidentiality. Available through Slack's compliance portal at slack.com/compliance.

ISO 27001: Information security management certification.

ISO 27018: Protection of personal data in public cloud. Relevant for GDPR.

HIPAA: Business associate agreement (BAA) available for Enterprise Grid customers. Relevant if your Slack workspace includes healthcare-related discussions.

GDPR: Slack offers a Data Processing Agreement for GDPR compliance. Available for all paid tiers. Includes SCCs for EU-to-US transfers.

FedRAMP Moderate: For US government customers.

Slack AI specifically is covered under the same compliance documentation as Slack itself, as it is a feature of the platform rather than a separate product.

GDPR implications: what is actually happening with your employees' messages

Under GDPR, your employees' messages in Slack likely contain personal data. Names appear constantly. Email addresses get shared. Discussions about employees, contractors, or customers may include sensitive personal information. When Slack AI processes those messages, your company is directing a processor to handle that personal data.

The GDPR analysis:

Lawful basis for processing. Your company (as controller) processes employee Slack messages under legitimate interests or employment contract basis. When you extend that to AI processing, the same basis applies, but you need to consider whether employees have a reasonable expectation that their messages would be analyzed by an AI system. For GDPR purposes, this is a transparency requirement, not a consent requirement for most workplace contexts.

Data Processing Agreement. Slack's DPA covers AI features. If you already have a Slack DPA signed, Slack AI is included. Verify this with your Slack account team, as DPA terms do update when significant new features are released.

Sub-processors. Slack AI uses third-party model providers in its backend. Slack publishes its sub-processor list at slack.com/compliance/sub-processors. Verify that the sub-processors used for Slack AI are listed and covered by the DPA.

Data residency. Slack offers a "Slack for the EU" option where data is stored in EU data centers. If your company requires EU data residency, verify whether Slack AI is available under EU data residency or whether AI processing routes through US infrastructure. As of mid-2026, this is an area to verify with Slack directly.

Data subject rights. If an employee requests their data or deletion, Slack AI summaries and interactions are covered under the same retention and deletion policies as regular Slack messages. Slack provides tooling for data export and deletion under their DPA terms.

The privacy concern your legal team will raise

When most legal and compliance teams first look at Slack AI, the concern they raise is: does Slack AI see private channel and DM content?

The short answer: by default, Slack AI indexes public channels. Private channels and DMs require admin configuration to include. But the important nuance is that a workspace admin enabling Slack AI for the organization makes a decision that affects every employee's reasonable expectation around their messages.

Document this decision. Make it a policy decision, not a technical default. Consider whether employees should be informed that AI is used to process messages. For EU-based employees, this transparency is a GDPR requirement under Articles 13 and 14 (information to data subjects at collection).

SOC 2: the controls that apply

CC9.1 vendor management. Add Slack to your vendor inventory if it is not already there. For the Slack AI add-on specifically, note that AI processing is within Slack's infrastructure and covered under the existing Slack relationship.

CC6 logical access. Control who in your organization has Slack AI enabled. Enterprise Grid allows per-workspace policy. If AI features should be restricted from channels that handle sensitive data, configure that restriction in Slack admin.

CC1 acceptable use. Your AI acceptable use policy should address Slack AI specifically. Many employees may not realize that the "AI" in Slack AI is actively reading their messages to generate summaries. The policy should set expectations.

Audit logging. Slack's audit log (available for Enterprise Grid) captures admin actions including Slack AI configuration changes. Export these logs to your SIEM. For smaller tiers, the standard Slack export provides message history for eDiscovery.

Enterprise Grid vs Business+ for compliance purposes

For companies with serious compliance requirements, the relevant distinction is between Business+ and Enterprise Grid.

Business+: Slack AI available. SOC 2 and DPA available. Does not include the full audit log API, SSO with SCIM provisioning, or granular per-workspace data export controls.

Enterprise Grid: Full compliance stack. Audit log API for SOC 2 evidence export. SCIM provisioning for centralized access management. Per-workspace message retention settings. Required for HIPAA BAA. Required for the most rigorous SOC 2 evidence collection.

If your company processes regulated data (health information, financial data) or is approaching Series B+ where enterprise customers will audit your controls, Enterprise Grid is the right tier.

Quick compliance checklist

Tip

  • Verify Slack DPA is signed and covers AI features
  • Confirm Slack AI is NOT training on your customer data (Slack policy says no)
  • Document which channels Slack AI can access (public only by default)
  • Verify sub-processors for Slack AI on Slack's sub-processor list
  • Confirm data residency configuration matches your GDPR requirements
  • Add Slack to your SOC 2 vendor inventory with AI feature note
  • Download current Slack SOC 2 Type II from Slack compliance portal
  • Include Slack AI in your AI acceptable use policy
  • Inform employees that AI processes Slack messages (GDPR transparency requirement for EU staff)
  • Consider Enterprise Grid if you need audit log API for SOC 2 evidence export

Frequently asked questions

Is Slack AI GDPR compliant?
Slack AI is GDPR compliant for Business+ and Enterprise Grid customers when a Data Processing Agreement is in place. Slack's DPA covers AI features and includes Standard Contractual Clauses for EU-to-US transfers. Verify that your existing Slack DPA explicitly covers AI features, and check Slack's sub-processor list to confirm the model providers used for Slack AI are listed.
Does Slack AI train on your messages?
No. Slack's policy states that customer data is not used to train the AI models that power Slack AI. This applies to all workspace messages, including those processed for summaries and search. Slack AI uses your messages to generate responses within your session but does not feed them into model training.
Does Slack AI read private messages and DMs?
By default, Slack AI indexes public channels only. Private channels and direct messages require explicit admin configuration to include. Workspace admins control which channels are accessible to Slack AI through the admin console. If private channel access is enabled, employees in those channels should be informed as part of your GDPR transparency obligations.
Does Slack have a SOC 2 report?
Yes. Slack maintains a SOC 2 Type II report covering security, availability, and confidentiality, available at slack.com/compliance. Slack also holds ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 certifications. Enterprise Grid customers can also obtain a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement.
What Slack tier do I need for compliance?
Business+ is the minimum tier for SOC 2 and GDPR compliance use. It includes a DPA, the Slack AI add-on availability, and SOC 2 documentation. Enterprise Grid adds the audit log API for automated SOC 2 evidence collection, SCIM provisioning for centralized access management, and per-workspace retention controls. If you need to export audit logs to a SIEM for SOC 2 evidence, Enterprise Grid is required.
